Before getting into any Half Life 2 specific settings and tweaks, this section covers the obligatory system optimization information I include in all my guides. If you've followed this advice recently from one of my other guides, you can skip this section.
I strongly urge you to take some time and follow the advice below if you truly want Half Life 2, and indeed every other game you own, to run at its fastest and most trouble-free.
Please note that the following guides have not been updated for Windows XP SP2.For the moment though, the information in these guides is still relevant and will improve your system performance.
The place to start is my System Optimization Guide for Gamers. This guide provides detailed information on where to find the latest BIOS and drivers for your system, how to install them "cleanly", understanding more about the hardware components that you're running, what overclocking is, how to correctly test an overclocked system for stability and so forth. Everything is explained from scratch, and technical jargon is kept to a minimum.
Once you've updated all your drivers and tweaked your BIOS, the next step is to examine my walkthrough guide to optimizing Windows: WinXP Tweaking: From Reformat to Relax. It has every major WindowsXP performance tweak in an easy to follow walkthrough style. This is the one guide you have to read if you only read one of these guides. It is vital to smooth, fast, stable gaming performance.
